Lexington Elementary School Evacuated After Loud Noise Shakes Ground

LEXINGTON (CBS) – Authorities evacuated Estabrook Elementary School in Lexington Thursday morning after a loud bang was heard and the ground shook.

The superintendent's office said that a loud underground noise was heard at about 9 a.m. It was not immediately clear what caused the disturbance at the school on Grove Street.

"An underground loud noise/bang occurred at the Estabrook School shortly after 9:00 a.m.," the school said in a statement. "All children and staff members are safe."

No injuries were reported. Students and staff were evacuated to the Field House at the high school.

"We suddenly heard a boom and then the fire drill went off, so we had to evacuate," said student Kavya Nataraj, who was in the library at the time. "It was really loud."

Laura Mahoney, a parent, said she heard the news from a neighbor.

"You kind of think of the worst," Mahoney said, mentioning recent school shooting incidents. "I'm just thrilled that everyone's safe."

Police and facilities workers remained on the scene at Estabrook to try and investigate the source of the noise.

The district said that elementary school students have been dismissed for the rest of the day. It's unclear whether school will resume Friday.
