'Ghoulish Garments' Unearthed By MBTA Workers
BOSTON (CBS) -- Deep inside the $82 million renovation of the Government Center MBTA stop, hidden inside a hollow concrete section, rolled in a ball, is a piece of Boston's past.
Two very creepy, very ragged, beat up costumes. They are cloaks with scary masks attached. One is red with stars, the other blue with stars.
A bricklayer made the find in a hollow section of concrete that they know was poured 60 years ago, making this a mystery from as far back as the 50's.
Tom Sipple lives in Saugus now, but he tells WBZ, "I've been living in City of Boston since I was three and honestly that is wacky!"
Another local says, "Really? 60 years old, pretty cool!"
It's a mystery for locals who say you never know what you are going to find in a city as old as Boston.
Sipple says, "The first thing I would think, it's a practical joke at the time or maybe something that got lost when they concreted over."
But on this, the week before Halloween, there is just something about the timing.
One man tells us, "Let's just hope they are not real corpses."
Unlike their riders, the MBTA isn't giving it much thought; in fact, they don't want to talk about it. In fact, the costumes are still with the construction company.
But this is one mystery locals say is worth digging into.
Sipple says, "That's really cool! I hope they put those on display!"
The good news is the find won't stop construction. "Despite these ghoulish garments, the work at Government Center Station remains on schedule, with the re-opening set for the spring," the T said.
