Phantom Gourmet: Scales In Millbury

MILLBURY (CBS) -- Land locked Millbury, Massachusetts might not be the first place you think of when it comes to ocean fresh seafood, but that's only because you haven't been to Scales.

"Because we're not located directly on the water, it is more of a challenge to get the freshest food ever. But I do get my deliveries five days a week. We try to order just for a night and we have to run out of something I'd rather run out of it then not have it fresh or the next day."

Dean Dellaventura has been in the restaurant business for decades. And when he and his wife Shari opened Scales, they made it a family affair.

"When you walk in here and you see our kids running around and my wife is working over there and I'm working in the kitchen, you feel like you're in my home. Our house. And that's the way we like it."

On any given night, families fill the BYOB dining room, where they feast on big plates of seafood and admire the restaurant's extensive collection of antique scales.

"We have baby scales, We have food scales. We have doctors scales. We have mail scales. You name it we pretty much have it."

When it comes to the food, of course there's plenty of golden fried seafood goodness,  plus lobster rolls, lobster mac and cheese, and creamy clam chowder served in a bread bowl.

"When we put the clam chowder inside of a bread bowl and all of the clams and the potatoes and everything his oozing all over the plate, they love it, they can't get enough of it."

And Dean likes to go beyond seafood, serving everything from pizza and short rib wellington, to garlic knots and five layer lasagna.

"We do counter service, so when they come up to the counter and grab their food, and they see this big massive pile of lasagna sitting in front of them, their eyes light up, their face lights up. You can see the little bit of drool coming down the side of their face. It's unbelievable."

And nothing makes Dean happier than making his customers happy.

"I was told a long time ago love what you do and you'll never work a day in your life. I could never see myself doing anything else but being a chef and now owning our own restaurant."
