Boy Hit By Car Thanks Hingham Police Officers Who Helped Him

HINGHAM (CBS) - A five-year-old boy hit by a car wants to make sure those who helped him know how much they are appreciated.

When he's not using his wheelchair, Luke Hansen prefers to crawl. It is almost easier, and he does not let his broken ankle stop him. Luke does not really like to talk about the accident or the ambulance ride.

"It was fun, but scary," he says.

Last Friday in downtown Hingham a driver ignored Luke, his brother Ben, and their father, blew through the crosswalk, and hit Luke.

The police were right there and an officer comforted Luke until EMTs arrived. The two boys wanted to thank the first responders and the police officers personally.

Ben says he will never forget that moment at the crosswalk. "I drew the picture of what I saw when it happened," he says.

Two boys making thank you cards may appear to be a simple gesture, but to the first responders it goes a long way.

"It means more to the average officer than an official commendation," says Hingham Police Sergeant Steven Dearth. "Those are the things we like, the things we bring home and share with our families, and we share among the department. So that's really special."

Luke's cast will be removed in about three weeks, but the card he and his brother made for the police will last forever.
