Family Mourns 74-Year-Old Woman Killed By Alleged Drunk Driver In Westport

WESTPORT (CBS) --  The family of 74-year-old Geraldine Correia,  of Dartmouth, is grieving after the mother and grandmother was killed Friday night by an alleged drunk driver.

Correia was out running a quick errand, her daughter said, when an SUV crashed into her sedan on Route 6 in Westport.

Police say she was ejected from her car when she was struck from behind. The impact caused her car to travel 100 feet down the westbound lanes of Route 6 before rolling over.

"I was on my way from work, we got rerouted and I called home to let them know that I was gonna be a little late," Correia's daughter Kim told WBZ-TV. "My father told me that there was a major car accident and that my mother was involved and that she passed away."

Police said the other driver, a 63-year-old man, was drunk and speeding. He was not hurt in the crash, and is now facing charges.

"She was a very loving compassionate woman and didn't deserve what she got," Kim said. "He's going to deserve everything he gets."

Police have not officially released the name of the victim or the suspect.
