Cockatoo With Dinosaur-Like Screech Vexes Brookline Neighbors

BROOKLINE (CBS) — What's a cockatoo to do?

How about hang out in some trees overlooking Brookline? That's what one cockatoo named Dino is doing. He's a pet that escaped from his cage, and he's wreaking havoc in the neighborhood outside.

He's even been eating away at a bit of local history, gnawing on the home where Robert Kennedy was born.

"It sort of splintered the shingles off and did some damage to the corner," said David Smith, a contractor who's been repairing the house.

Homeowner John Reinstein wishes Dino would fly South.

"It carved out a place where it could nest, and you know, we're sympathetic, but it's not really what we had in mind for the house," he said.

A couple of bird rescuers showed up in the neighborhood Friday trying to lure Dino down from the trees with a stash of bananas and nuts.

"Cockatoos don't do very well under 50 degrees," said Joe Liu.

But no one is more concerned about the bird than his owner, Shawna Payne.

"I'll do anything for him to get back," she says.

"I really miss him. I wouldn't be able to live knowing my bird is out there," she said, worried about cold temperatures in the weekend forecast.

The Animal Rescue League was at the scene Friday night, attempting to lure the bird into a cage. So far, no luck.
