Cape Cod Family Distressed That Baby Squirrel Was Euthanized

SANDWICH, Mass. (AP) — A Cape Cod family who cared for a baby squirrel for two weeks before bringing it to a wildlife center is questioning why the animal was euthanized.

The Cape Cod Times reports that Bruce and Marisa Fraser say their 12-year-old daughter Juliette is "devastated" the center opted to put down the squirrel they named Woodward.

The Frasers found the animal in their yard after it rolled out of a shipment of wood. They used a heating pad to keep it warm and fed it with formula, eventually taking it to the Cape Wildlife Center in Barnstable.

When they called the next day, they were told it was euthanized because it was underweight and had a foot injury.

Director Deborah Millman called it a "tough decision" but the best option.
