Former Irish Banker At Center Of Banking Scandal Arrested In Massachusetts

BOSTON (CBS) -- David Drumm, a former chief executive at Anglo Irish Bank who is at the center of an Irish banking scandal, has been arrested by US marshals on an extradition warrant in Massachusetts on Saturday, according to the Boston Globe.

Christina Diorio-Sterling, a spokeswoman for the US Attorney's Office, told WBZ-TV Drumm will remain in custody until his hearing in federal court in Boston on Tuesday. She declined to provide additional information.

Drumm, a Wellesley resident, was the head of Anglo Irish Bank in September 2008, when its finances unraveled during the global financial meltdown, according to the Globe. The newspaper reported he left his post that year after disclosures that chairman Sean FitzPatrick had received $115 million in secret loans from the bank.

At one point, Drumm was one of the wealthiest bankers in Ireland, the newspaper reports. He fled to Boston in 2009 after he was facing pressure from Irish authorities.

It's unclear what charges Drumm will be answering to when he appears in court.

No additional information was immediately available.
