Tom Brady Named AFC Offensive Player Of The Month; Gostkowski Takes Home Special Teams Honors

BOSTON (CBS) -- Just a few days after throwing the 400th touchdown pass of his Hall of Fame career, Tom Brady has another award for his trophy shelf.

After tearing apart opposing defenses the last three weeks, Brady was named the AFC's Offensive Player of the Month for September on Thursday.

In New England's 3-0 start to the season, Brady completed 96 of his 133 passes (good for a 72.2 percent completion percentage) and threw for an NFL-leading 1,112 yards. He has nine touchdowns on the season, second only to Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Brady started the season by throwing four touchdown passes on opening night against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and followed it up with a 466-yard showing in Week 2 against the Bills in Buffalo. He threw a pair of touchdown passes in last Sunday's win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, including the 400th of his career. He joined Peyton Manning, Brett Favre and Dan Marino as the only other quarterbacks to throw 400 or more touchdown passes in their career.

This is the eighth time overall that Brady has earned an AFC Player of the Month honor.

In addition to Brady being named Offensive Player of the Month, Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski was named Special Teams Player of the Month. Goskowski is a perfect 7-for-7 on field goal attempts and 14-for-14 on extra points for the season. Sunday against Jacksonville, Gostkowski set an NFL record for most consecutive extra points, surpassing Matt Stover's 422 straight extra points without a miss. Gostkowski is now up to 425 consecutive extra points without a miss.

Gostkowski leads the NFL with 35 total points and 18 touchbacks through the first three games of the season.
