Police Investigate Death Of Toddler In Worcester

WORCESTER (CBS) - Police are investigating the sudden death of a 2-year-old girl in Worcester. The girl was found unresponsive in a Wellington Street apartment Monday morning.

The girl was thought to be sleeping when her older brother checked on her shortly after 11:00 a.m.

"Her oldest son came out saying 'something's wrong with Gigi, she's blue, she's not breathing,'" said neighbor Jonathan Santiago.

He said the girl's mother then threw him a phone and told him to call an ambulance.

"She came out pale white, like pale, pale, pale," Santiago said. "Her face was blue, her lips had no color."

Paramedics could not revive the child and she was pronounced dead at the hospital. Police said there were no signs of trauma and an autopsy will determine the cause of death.

As police removed roughly a dozen bags of evidence from the apartment Monday night, the child's uncle insisted this will turn out to be a tragic freak accident.

"Any type of sinister thing is not true," Kristopher Posterro said. "She loves her kids, she is just so distraught right now, she doesn't even know what to do."

The Department of Children and Families says they did not have any ongoing involvement with the family until now. The state now has custody of the child's two older siblings.
