Larry Lucchino Gets A New Job With Red Sox

BOSTON (CBS) --  Larry Lucchino has a new job with the Boston Red Sox.

The team named Lucchino President/CEO Emeritus on Sunday, where he will be an active participant in the strategic direction of the team in addition to participating in various issues facing Major League Baseball.

Lucchino will take over his new job on October 16, when chief operating officer Sam Kennedy will take over as club President.

"It's time for me to take a step back," Lucchino said in a statement on Sunday. "I have been fortunate to work in baseball for over 36 years.  These 14 years with the Red Sox have been the pinnacle. I love this team, I love this ballpark, I love this city, and I intend to remain active with the club and in the community."

During his tenure with the team, Lucchino helped lead the Red Sox to three World Series championships and led the renovation of Fenway Park.

"Larry has helped write a new chapter in the storied history of this franchise," principal owner John Henry said in a release. "He has brought boldness, vision, and intensity each day to Fenway Park. He has also assembled an outstanding team around him, the hallmark of a great CEO.

"Since 2012, we have known that it would be a natural transition for Sam to succeed Larry when he was ready to relinquish the reins.  Tom and I feel fortunate that there is an obvious and strong successor within our organization," added Henry.
