3 NH High School Students Hurt In Head-On Crash With Drunk Driver, Police Say

EXETER, N.H. (CBS) -- Three high school students were hurt in a head-on collision with a drunk driver in Exeter, New Hampshire on Friday night, police say.

Police and firefighters were called to the crash on Newfields Road shortly after 10 p.m. Officers determined that Daniel Rainville, 44, of Auburn, New Hampshire, drove his 2011 Dodge Avenger over the center line and collided with a vehicle in the opposite lane, according to a police press statement released on Saturday.

Three 17-year-old girls who attend Exeter High School were in the vehicle struck by the alleged drunk driver. The driver and passenger in the front seat suffered minor injuries, and they were treated and later released from Exeter Hospital.

A backseat passenger was seriously hurt and rushed to Portsmouth Regional Hospital. Their status is currently unknown.

Rainville has been charged with operating under the influence of liquor, second offense. He was released on $7,500 personal recognizance and will appear in court on Oct. 6.

"This is a truly tragic incident that left three young high school students injured due to the recklessness of one driver," Exeter Police Chief Richard Kane said in the statement.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Exeter police at (603) 772-1212.
