Habitat For Humanity Building Roxbury Home Named After Pope

BOSTON (CBS) -- With every nail and every hammer the spirit of Pope Francis is alive at a home under construction on Woodbine Street in Roxbury.

It not only bares his name, but it's where actions speak louder than words in true Francis style.

"You get the feeling of giving back, even if it's just a little," said Stephen Flynn, owner of Flynn Roofing.

His company is volunteering with Habitat for Humanity to build the home that comes from an anonymous donor who wanted it named for the Pope who has made helping those less fortunate part of his mandate.

"He likes the quote 'Work confers dignity' and that's the habitat model. Our families work on homes before they buy them," said Lark Palermo, president of Habitat for Humanity Greater Boston.

Niulka Martinez will move into the first-floor unit by next spring, with the help of a Habitat mortgage that requires her family contribute 300 hours in the construction, and says it's fitting it is the Francis House.

"Inspire people in communities to join forces and do amazing things, and we're very honored," she said.

It was a challenge pledge from the donor who gave $60,000 for the project and asked the community to raise another $60,000. They are half way there, but the timing of the pope's visit has had an impact on the house that bares his name.

"I think there have been more inquiries, calls and donations," said Palermo. It will help them reach their ultimate goal, a goal Niulka Martinez never thought possible. "It is great to know it's your home you own, and that so many people were part of the dream."
