State Trooper Accidentally Shoots Himself In Leg

AYER (CBS) - A Massachusetts State Trooper is expected to survive after accidentally shooting himself in the leg, State Police said.

It happened Tuesday morning at the department's Emergency Vehicle Operations Center in Ayer, according to spokesman Dave Procopio.

The sergeant was carrying a department-issued shotgun from his old cruiser to a new cruiser "when the weapon accidentally discharged, striking him in the leg," officials said. No one else was involved in the accident, according to State Police.

The veteran sergeant, who has not been identified, was rushed to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester on a medical helicopter. He's being treated for non-life-threatening gunshot injuries to one leg.

No other information is available at this point in the investigation.
