Number Of First Weekend Arrests At UNH Highest In 5 Years

DURHAM, N.H. (AP) — Police at the University of New Hampshire and Durham police say the number of arrests made on and around campus after students arrived for school in late August is the highest in five years.

Foster's Daily Democrat reports that police made 46 arrests between Aug. 24 and Aug. 30 — most of them alcohol-related. Police say seventy percent of those arrested were under 21.

Authorities also noted that 26 percent of those arrested had no affiliation with the university.

Durham police made 32 of the arrests, UNH police arrested eight and state police arrested six.

Durham Police Chief David Kurz says 14 percent of the arrests were drug-related.

Kurz said a number of freshmen were among the 32 his department arrested, and were dreading telling their parents.
