MBTA Plans To Replace Concord Rail Bridge In 24 Hours

CONCORD (AP) — The MBTA is replacing an outdated commuter rail bridge in Concord and plans to do it all in about a day's work.

State transportation officials say the new $9 million Route 62 bridge is being installed over a 24-hour period this weekend using what they call a "roll-in" process.

The new bridge structure was actually assembled over the past year on adjacent roadway.

Crews first plan to remove the track and demolish the existing bridge, then use two 80-wheel transporters to slowly move the new bridge into place on Saturday.

The new bridge is expected to be ready for regular commuter rail service on Monday.

Because of the poor condition of the old bridge, trains could only run at 25 mph, but are expected to be able to reach 65 mph on the new structure.
