North Brookfield Veteran Killed By Suicide Bomber In Afghanistan
NORTH BROOKFIELD (CBS) -- A North Brookfield mother is grieving the death of her son who was killed in a suicide bombing in Afghanistan Saturday.
"I think he was a hero," Janice Proctor said. "He did a job that many people wouldn't want but it needed to be done."
Richard McEvoy was a veteran working as a defense contractor when a suicide bomber attacked a NATO convey in Kabul.
Proctor said her son always loved the military. He served in the Army for 30 years and retired as a colonel before returning as a contractor.
"I would tell him, 'that's it. When your contract is up you stay home.' And I kind of thought he would," she said.
McEvoy's contract would end in March 2016, but Proctor said that didn't necessarily mean he would retire.
"Everybody I ever talked to always says how much they like him and love him, and what a good leader he was, what a good boss he was." she said.
McEvoy had just returned to the country after a family vacation in Ireland. He leaves behind his wife, son, and daughter.
Proctor will be at Dover Air Base Wednesday to see her son return home.
