Patriots Announce Signing Of Receiver Reggie Wayne

BOSTON (CBS) -- With health questions surrounding a few of their top receivers, the New England Patriots have added one of the best pass-catchers over the last 14 years to the mix.

They also added a little juice to their rivalry with the Indianapolis Colts in the process.

The Patriots officially announced the signing of receiver Reggie Wayne on Tuesday. It was reported on Monday that the two sides agreed to a one-year deal after the team had the 36-year-old in for a physical over the weekend.

The Colts announced in March that they would not be re-signing Wayne, who is the NFL's active leader in receptions and receiving yards. In 15 games for Indianapolis last season, Wayne caught 64 passes for 779 yards and two touchdowns. Over his 14-year-career, Wayne has hauled in 82 touchdowns in 211 regular season games, adding another nine scores in 21 postseason contests.

The signing adds a little more depth to the position for the Patriots, who have been without Julian Edelman and Brandon LaFell throughout the preseason, as well as Aaron Dobson. Brandon Gibson, who the Patriots signed in the offseason, limped off the field late Saturday night in New England's preseason win in New Orleans and was placed on the season-ending IR on Monday.

The Patriots and Colts, who met in last season's AFC Championship game, will square off in Week 6 of the regular season in Indianapolis.
