Keller @ Large: College Students Welcome To Boston!

BOSTON (CBS) - State officials have issued their annual warning to incoming college students about the Storrow Drive overpasses, and not a moment too soon.

The student stampede is about to begin in earnest, and as if Storrow hasn't been enough of a nightmare, you can count on at least one crumpled rent-a-truck paralyzing the drive next week.

Let me stipulate – most college students will come here and behave responsibly. And we locals welcome them, we really do.

We like their money, their youthful energy, their money, their zest for living here, and did we mention their money?

But the annual student invasion does bring with it some problems, and those we don't especially care for.

For starters, kids, be advised that the city's streets are not a pedestrian mall. Stick to the sidewalks and crosswalks, and look left, right and left again before you cross, even if you see the walk sign.

This is for your safety, and our sanity. And no, "jamming to your tunes" is not an excuse for being oblivious.

Also, please note that all barrooms, dorms and other haunts of yours have facilities to…wash up in. The front and backyards of your neighbors are not to be used for that purpose.

Speaking of the neighbors, most of them work hard for a living, and need their rest. You are welcome to express your high spirits between the hours of 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.

Otherwise, keep your voice down, and reserve your shrieking for your next visit home, where I'm sure your parents will be a more receptive audience.

And finally, please know that in this great sports city, fans of all teams are welcome to express their pride by wearing the paraphernalia of your hometown team.

Except if you're from New York or Montreal.

And we're not too crazy about Philadelphia either.
