Lowell Store Owner Shoots At Fleeing Robbers
LOWELL (CBS) – A store owner in Lowell fired his gun at two robbers as they ran away from his shop with thousands of dollars they had just stolen from him.
Kim Seng was getting ready to close up The 99 Store on Liberty Street just before 9 p.m. Wednesday when two men jumped over the counter, tackled him to the floor, stole about $10,000 and ran off.
Seng told WBZ-TV he grabbed his gun and fired two shots at the men, but they got away. One bullet hit a building near the store.
The entire incident was captured on the store's surveillance video cameras.
"I shot to protect myself, you know what I mean? I'm working so hard, seven days a week. I open at 6 o'clock in the morning until 9 (p.m.) every single day so I've been here for 16 years and I've never had any problem," he said.
Police said Seng legally owned the gun.
The suspects are described by investigators as black, wearing dark colored hoodies.
About an hour after the robbery, one man fitting the description of one of the suspects was spotted by police who chased him.
Officers say he dropped a backpack during the chase. It had a loaded Tech 9 firearm inside, according to police.
It's not clear yet if the man is one of the two robbery suspects, but he was taken into custody.
No other information is available at this point in the investigation.
