Walsh, Evans Continue Efforts To Stop Recent Boston Violence

BOSTON (CBS) – Boston Mayor Marty Walsh and Police Commissioner Bill Evans showed that getting into the neighborhoods is one part of the solution to stopping the recent increase in violence.

The pair walked through a Roxbury neighborhood on Wednesday.

Evans and Walsh plan to walk through Boston neighborhoods and talk with residents, as will clergy members. It was one idea that came out of a brainstorming session on Monday.

Carmen lives feet away from Boston Police Headquarters in Roxbury. But her location does not mean she feels safe - especially when it comes to her kids.

"I would love for our kids to be able to go outside and enjoy a day outside without the gun violence," said Carmen.

The Roxbury resident has a daughter and a son. She said she doesn't know what the solution is to stopping the violence.

She did appreciate seeing Walsh and Evans in her neighborhood and the ability to talk to them directly.

"It's nice to know they do care and they are out here," said Carmen.

Evans said they are making progress in solving the shootings. Police are still asking for the public's help.

On Wednesday, the city also announced they are re-starting the gun buyback program.

People can drop-off a firearm with no questions asked in exchange for a $200 gift card. Police said rifles and shotguns are not accepted.
