Red Sox Hire Jerry Dipoto As Temporary Consultant

BOSTON (CBS) -- The Boston Red Sox have hired Jerry Dipoto to provide another voice in the front office, at least for the time being.

Dipoto was hired as a temporary consultant to help GM Ben Cherington and his staff come up with a plan for the upcoming offseason. The 47-year-old Dipoto resigned as general manager of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in July after four years on the job.

It's unclear how long Dipoto will remain with Boston, as he's reportedly free to explore any general manager jobs that may open up over the offseason.

Dipoto does have some history with the Red Sox, serving as a team scout in 2003 and 2004. Before that, he had an eight-year career as a relief pitcher, going 27-24 in 390 appearances for the Cleveland Indians, New York Mets and Colorado Rockies.

The hiring of Dipoto, which was first reported by Peter Gammons and has not yet been made official by the team, comes just weeks after Larry Lucchino announced that he was stepping down as president and CEO of the team following this season. Sam Kennedy will take over for Lucchino as team president.
