Child With Lighter Causes 3-Alarm Roxbury Fire

BOSTON (CBS) – Boston firefighters battled heavy flames on the top floor of a Roxbury apartment building on Friday afternoon.

Crews were called to 6 Waverly Street in Roxbury around 12:30 p.m.

The fire started inside the Mt. Pleasant Apartments.

Investigators determined the cause of the fire was a child with a lighter on the top floor.

Boston firefighters said it does not appear anyone was injured in the fire.

By about 1 p.m., the heavy flames had been knocked down.

The fire reached three alarms as flames broke through the roof.

According to the Boston Fire Department, the building had four apartments per floor and 16 total. At least eight of those apartments has fire, water and smoke damage.

Damage at the apartment is estimated at about $500,000.
