South Weymouth Naval Hangar Transforming Into Movie Studio

SOUTH WEYMOUTH (CBS) – A run down naval base is getting a Hollywood makeover.

The former South Weymouth Naval Air Station, which has been abandoned for 17 years, is being redeveloped into a mixed use property in Abington, Rockland and Weymouth.

Developer Kyle Corkum of LStar said the property, known as Southfield, will include housing, restaurants, businesses, a sports complex and even a movie studio.

The movie studio will be housed in a naval hangar that had been damaged by vandals in recent years.

Floors were ripped up, spray paint coated the building, and nearly every window had been smashed.

But the facility is being renovated, and in two weeks a movie will be shot in the hangar. Corkum said he couldn't reveal what the project is.

Corkum added that the Massachusetts Film Commissioner is using the resources to attract more production companies.

"A single day of shooting of a movie of this type will generate 225k in economic benefit for the people in the region. I love that," Corkum told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Karen Twomey.

In total, the Southfield community is a 1,400-acre property.

"This will start generating tax revenue, then jobs. And then it kind of starts to kickstart Southfield into life," Corkum said of the movie studio.
