Over-The-Counter Supplements Probably Don't Improve Fertility

BOSTON (CBS) -- Women having trouble getting pregnant often try every trick in the book, but can an over-the-counter supplement really make a difference? Dr. Mallika Marshall explains.

Since the beginning of time, women have been trying all kinds of tactics to improve their chances of getting pregnant. One company says it could be as easy as popping over-the-counter pills.

It's called the PregPrep Conception Kit and it consists of two products, VitaPrep, a prenatal vitamin with vitamin D, vitamin B12, and folic acid, which can help prevent certain birth defects, and FertilPrep which contains a substance called N-acetyl Cysteine (NAC) thought to thin cervical mucus and make it easier for sperm to get to its destination.

However, fertility specialists say that is no clear scientific evidence that any of these ingredients alone or in combination will improve fertility. And it's not cheap. A 30-day supply costs about $30.
