Wake Held For Massachusetts Marine Killed In Chattanooga Shooting
SPRINGFIELD (CBS/AP) — A Marine killed by a gunman in Tennessee two weeks ago was honored in his hometown in Massachusetts.
Springfield turned out in force on Sunday to mourn Gunnery Sgt. Thomas Sullivan.
Governor Charlie Baker was among the notables who came to pay respects to the family.
Sullivan seemed to be known by many, including the funeral director, who felt honored to provide a place for the community to say goodbye.
"We've never seen this like this this is an enormous turnout," funeral director John Sampson told WBZ-TV.
Sullivan's body was returned to Springfield on Friday night as people lined the streets to honor him.
Sullivan was one of five service members killed during an attack on military facilities in Chattanooga on July 16. The gunman was killed by police.
More than 100 people attended laid wreaths and planted flowers in Foxboro on Sunday for the five service members.
A private funeral service for Sullivan is scheduled Monday at Holy Cross Church. Springfield's Roman Catholic Bishop Mitchell Rozanski is scheduled to be the main celebrant and to deliver the homily.
Burial will follow in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam.
