Woburn Man Allegedly Leads State Police On High-Speed Chase In Stolen Taxi

WATERTOWN (CBS) -- A 29-year-old Woburn man allegedly led State Police on a high-speed chase in a stolen taxi early Monday morning.

The taxi was reported stolen around 3:28 a.m., according to the State Police blog. The car is owned by McCue's Taxi of Watertown.

Shortly thereafter, a trooper saw a taxi traveling on Interstate 90 West on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Ashland. The trooper followed the car until another trooper joined him while traveling west in Auburn before trying to stop the vehicle.

Police say the driver of the taxi continued traveling west at speeds over 100 miles per hour.

Troopers made multiple attempts to stop the taxi before the car drove over a tire deflation device laid across the roadway in Chicopee.

The taxi then traveled at speeds of around 30 miles per hour and exited onto Interstate 291 in Chicopee before eventually stopping in a parking lot along Route 20, police say.

After a brief foot chase, the driver of the taxi was caught and arrested.

Welbert Nasser will be charged with larceny of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, speeding on Massachusetts Turnpike, marked lanes violation, reckless operation of a vehicle and operating a vehicle with license suspended, subsequent offense.

He is expected to appear in Framingham District Court.
