Celtics Waive Phil Pressey
BOSTON (CBS) -- The Celtics have waived point guard Phil Pressey, the team announced Wednesday afternoon.
The Celtics had to decide whether to guarantee Pressey's $947,276 salary for 2015-16 or waive him by the end of the day Wednesday. He becomes a victim of a depth chart crunch on Boston, who drafted Terry Rozier and R.J. Hunter last month to add to their plethora of guards.
"It's really tough for us to waive Phil," Danny Ainge told The Boston Herald shortly after the move was made. "He's won over the hearts of his coaches, management and teammates."
Celtics coaches praised Pressey during his two-year stay in Boston, including head coach Brad Stevens earlier this month.
"I think we all feel this way, we love Phil," Stevens declared on July 3. "We all appreciate the way he works. We like what he does."
"He has a very good future — he'll land on his feet," Ainge told the Herald on Wednesday. "What I loved about Phil was his ability to not play for a couple of games, but always be ready the next time he was called on."
In his two seasons with the Celtics, Pressey averaged 3.1 points and 2.9 assists per game.
