Celtics Acquire Perry Jones From Thunder
BOSTON (CBS) -- The Boston Celtics have acquired forward Perry Jones III from the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The Celtics receive Jones, a 2019 second-round pick and cash from the Thunder in exchange for a conditional second-round pick. The move is mostly a salary dump for Oklahoma City.
The 6-foot-11 Jones will add more size to the Celtics if he makes the team out of camp, something Boston was desperate for at the wing. Jones, who can play both forward positions, struggled to earn playing time his first two years in Oklahoma City after being drafted 28th overall out of Baylor in 2012, but averaged a career-high 4.3 points over 14.7 minutes per game last season. He's averaged 3.4 points per game over his three-year career, averaging 11.7 minutes of play in 143 games, including 21 career starts.
Jones is a career 42 percent shooter from the floor, but struggles from beyond the arc, hitting just 29 percent of his shots from the three-point line.
Jones was seen as a lottery pick entering the 2012 NBA Draft, but fell to the Thunder late in the first round. The Celtics could have drafted Jones with either of their two first-round picks in that draft, but they opted for Jared Sullinger (21st overall) and Fab Melo (22nd overall). With the addition of Jones, the Celtics have 15 guaranteed rosters for next season. That does not include a deal for second-round pick Jordan Mickey, who is expected to be signed soon, so don't think President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge is done for the summer.
