NH State Police Identify Stepfather And Son Who Drowned In River

BOSCAWEN, N.H. (CBS) -- New Hampshire State Police have identified the father and son who drowned in the Merrimack River on Wednesday in Boscawen as 34-year-old Jibril Mohamed and 10-year-old Javier Gonzalez.

Police say Fish and Game divers recovered Gonzalez's body from 20-to-25 on Thursday at 8:19 a.m. Later that day, Mohamed's body was found in 12 feet of water at 4:43 p.m.

Boscawen police say a family of four were swimming at a sandbar in the Merrimack River when the boy went under water. The incident happened in the early evening hours on Wednesday near the Hannah Duston Bridge.

The mother called 911 after seeing both disappear.

Crews were called to the scene around 6 p.m. on Wednesday, but the search was suspended after about three hours due to low visibility and strong currents.

The Marine Patrol asks all swimmers to use designated swimming areas with a life guard on duty and reminds those swimming in rivers and streams that strong currents and underwater debris are a safety hazard.
