Garbage Truck Lands In North Andover Lake

NORTH ANDOVER (CBS) -- A garbage truck crashed through a barrier and landed in a North Andover lake on Thursday morning.

North Andover police said it was just before 6 a.m. when the garbage truck went into Lake Cochichewick near 1650 Great Pond Road.

The 27-year-old driver of the truck climbed out of the truck as it sank, and was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

The lake supplies drinking water to the town, but there is no risk to the public because a small fuel spill was quickly contained, officials said.

"We'll do extra testing to be sure, but we're all confident there's going to be none," Water Superintendent Glen Alt said.

Great Pond Road was closed Thursday morning as a tow company used heavy machinery to remove the truck from the water.
