Winners Named In 15th Hampton Beach Sand Sculpting Competition
HAMPTON BEACH, N.H. (AP) — Sculptors have put their finishing touches on their masterpieces made of sand at the 15th annual Hampton Beach Master Sand Sculpting Competition in New Hampshire. And the winners have been named.
Among them are Karen Fralich of Toronto, 1st place; Justin Gordon of Massachusetts, People's Choice; and Abe Waterman of Prince Edward Island, Sculptor's Choice.
Sand sculptors from across Canada and the United States competed for prize money or bragging rights. The competition began Thursday, with each artist having 21 hours to shape a 10-ton pile of sand into an award-winning sculpture.
Event coordinator and master sculptor Greg Grady says the artists have a high degree of skill and continually push themselves to do better.
An awards ceremony and fireworks were held Saturday.
The sculptures will remain on display through July 5 and will be lit for night viewing.
Past creations have included mermaids and other mythical creatures, knitting grandmothers, fairy tale characters, giant cats, pirates and hockey goalies.
