Phantom Gourmet: Abington Ale House

ABINGTON (CBS) -- At first glance, the Abington Ale House may look more like an like an eclectic museum than a casual eatery, with local treasures and flea market finds covering just about every inch of wall space.

"That is a trolley filled with liquor bottles."
"That is an Alaskan wolf."
"There is an old-fashioned slot machine."
"And the lion showed up."
"And my father said, 'Where will we put that?' And I go, 'I don't care where we put it. We have to get it.'"
"It's just a fun atmosphere."

But owner Mary Barrett-Costello insists this South Shore restaurant goes far beyond its funky appearance. Having been in business more than 20 years, Abington Ale House has perfected its menu, offering a little something for everyone.

For starters, there's the crispy onion strings served with a horseradish dipping sauce... and nachos smothered in chili, cheddar cheese and fresh garden salsa.

For your main meal, you can chow down on slow roasted baby back ribs, or a plate of Key West Orange Chicken. And if you're feeling fancy, there's perfectly pan seared sea scallops with a Dijon mustard maple reduction.

It's a menu as diverse as its decor, and Mary says it's all keeping in line with their founding philosophy.

"What we carried forward from my father is that the customer is number one. Without the customer, we have no business," she says. "So our intent is always to wow the customer with great portions at a reasonable price. We do not want a customer leaving our walls that is not happy."

You can find the Abington Ale House at 1235 Bedford St. in Abington, or online at AbingtonAleHouse.com
