Great White Shark Allegedly Spotted Off Maine Coast

WELLS, Maine (CBS) -- People aboard a chartered fishing boat allegedly saw a great white shark on Saturday afternoon off the coast of Moody Beach in Maine.

Wells police say the boat was 1.2 miles off the coast when the shark was spotted around 1:30 p.m.

The harbormaster sent a boat out to where the shark was reportedly sighted, but could not find it. They contacted the U.S. Coast Guard and neearby communities to make them aware of the sighting.

On their Facebook page, police say "this sighting is abnormal given the time of year and proximity to the beach."

Investigators say they do not see any danger or need for a beach closure.

The sighting remains under investigation.
