Lifeguard Helps Rescue Boy From Acton Pool

ACTON (CBS) – A young boy nearly drowned in an Acton pool, but witnesses say a lifeguard's quick actions helped save the child.

Acton Police said a 911 caller reported a possible drowning at TeamWorks on Great Road around 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Firefighters and police found a 4-year-old boy unresponsive when they arrived at the pool, but were able to revive him.

The boy was conscious and crying while being brought to Boston Children's Hospital, police said. As of Wednesday night, the four-year old was still at Children's Hospital. Kris Wallis, General Manager of Teamworks Acton said the boy was OK.

Witnesses told police the boy, who was attending summer camp, was saved by the quick actions of a lifeguard at the pool.

Wallis said at the time of the incident there was a lifeguard and two counselors in the immediate area.

The Acton Health Department shut down the camp following the incident.

Health officials said TeamWorks had not completed all the work required for a camp and had not been issued a permit. The organization will remain closed until all required work is completed.

In a statement, TeamWorks says they were operating legally.

"We know of absolutely no reason for the Town Board of Health to suggest that we were not fully licensed to operate the summer camp," TeamWorks said. "We were given the same verbal approval by the Town that we have been given each and every prior year."

In response, the health department says that's not true, and each year they perform an inspection and issue the permit that day or the following day.

Police say the boy was taking part in open swim with as many as 10 other children. Officers say enough staff was on hand.

Police say it is unclear what led up to the near drowning and how long the boy was face down in the water.
