Keller @ Large: Drop The Jargon, Offer A Real Plan

BOSTON (CBS) -- I confess, it was such a nice day on Saturday that I chose throwing the ball for Buddy the Lab over watching Hillary Clinton's big campaign speech down in New York.

Please note, I would have made that same decision even if she were a man.

But I did go back and watch the speech later, and also carefully read through the text of it, searching for clues to what she might actually do if elected, a question I thought some of you might actually care about.

She took many positions, none that would make you raise an eyebrow. In the interests of time, let's focus on the one issue every poll shows you care about the most, the economy.

Secretary Clinton says she will "reward businesses who invest in long-term value rather than the quick buck," a promise sure to arouse skeptics of government's judgment in determining just what "long-term value" is.

She also pledges to "give new incentives to companies that offer more profit-sharing to their workers," even as she is "providing tax relief, cutting red tape, and making it easier to get a small business loan."

This all sounds good until you start thinking about it.

In the Clinton vision, more Washington-based micro-managing of the economy somehow co-exists with less government taxation and bureaucracy. While this tension is somehow being resolved, she will get busy leading us "to the cutting edge of innovation, science and research."

How?

By "increasing both public and private investments."

Keep in mind as you process this that it will all create "millions of jobs and countless new businesses."

There's no question, improving the economic climate for more people should be job one for the next president.

Perhaps as election day approaches, Hillary Clinton and her competitors will drop the jargon and offer a real plan.
