John Farrell: Wade Miley's Outburst 'Unacceptable' But Sox Are Moving On

BOSTON (CBS) -- With his team miring in last place, Red Sox manager John Farrell is intent on making his dugout confrontation with Wade Miley a thing of the past.

"What took place in the office in Baltimore stays there," Farrell said prior to Friday night's game at Fenway, regarding his Thursday night meeting with Miley. "That's probably the best answer I'll give you."

Farrell was confronted, angrily, by Miley in the dugout on Thursday night in Baltimore. NESN cameras captured the exchange, which showed Miley pointing (perhaps to the bullpen, where Steven Wright had been warming up during the fourth inning) and then walking away in anger. Farrell followed Miley down the tunnel to the clubhouse, where the conversation presumably continued.

After the game, Farrell said he respected Miley's competitiveness and desire to play, while Miley declined to elaborate on the nature of the discussion. On Friday, Farrell added that he told Miley that such behavior was unacceptable.

"He obviously did not like the decision to remove him from the game. But the outburst in the dugout is something that is unacceptable and I won't stand for it," Farrell said. "As a result, we met immediately following the game."

Farrell added that all parties have moved on from the showdown.

"I think the best thing is we addressed it, he is understanding on my thoughts on it and the fact that it's unacceptable," Farrell said. "But I think the best thing for all of us is that we turn the page and move on from it."

"The surprising thing is the setting where it took place," Farrell continued. "There are always going to be decisions players don't agree with. But there is a way to go about expressing that, and that wasn't the case last night."

Players in the clubhouse on Friday afternoon seemed to indicate that there would be no carry-over effect from Thursday night's blow-up.

"I'm sure things will be resolved," Mookie Betts told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Jonny Miller. "I think everything's going to be all right."

"That's squashed, Jonny," Brock Holt said. "It was over yesterday. It was kind of a heat of the moment deal. Things like that happen. So that's all past us now."
