Cambridge Ranked 13th Best City For Retirement

BOSTON (CBS) - Thinking about retirement? How about that retirement home? Your oasis may be closer than you think.

How does Cambridge sound? It's ranked the 13th best city in which to retire by Bankrate.com.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Jeff Brown Reports

"There's actually a lot to like in Cambridge," Bankrate.com Research Director Chris Kahn says. "Walkability is one of those statistics that basically talks about how easy it is to get around the city."

What else?

"The health care system in Massachusetts is excellent, off the charts," Kahn said. "It's one of the best ranking health care systems in terms of quality that we found."

So what's not to like?

"Your weather score was below average," Kahn said.

Also many cannot afford it.

"Cost of living and taxes. Massachusetts one of the higher taxing states in the country."

Bankrate says if you're serious about going somewhere else, head west.

"They tend to really hit that sweet spot of pretty good weather, lot of sunshine in the western half of the United States, especially in the Rocky Mountain area. We're also finding relatively low cost of living, low taxes."

Chris said some areas that did well were Colorado, Denver, Austin and Salt Lake City.

This is the first city ranking by Bankrate.

By the way, the worst place in which to retire is New York City, the study found.
