Bomb Squad Detonates Explosives Found At Auburn Home

AUBURN (CBS) - A Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad detonated explosives found at an Auburn home on Saturday.

Fire and police crews were called to a Rochdale Street house at 10:59 a.m. after workers made the discovery while tearing down a shed. Police say they discovered one pound of C4 military explosives, which is "stable unless some external charge is applied."

An Auburn police K9 unit identified the C4 as a real explosive.

Fire officials say the explosives did not pose a threat to the community, and the bomb squad was called to the scene.

Police say they issued a Code Red message to residents living within a one-mile radius of the Rochdale Street home to let them know about the situation.

The bomb squad detonated the explosives at Auburn police's shooting range on Rochdale Street by 3 p.m.

Investigators also found a mix of hazardous chemicals on the property, so a State HAZMAT Team was called in. Other unstable chemicals that could be used as precursors were found in the main house, police say. The house was then made safe.

ATF also provided assistance at the scene.

No arrests have been made.

Police believe that no one lives at the house.
