Roche: Red Sox In Disarray, But It's Not Too Late For A Turnaround

BOSTON (CBS) - The Red Sox were a big topic of discussion on Monday morning's Toucher & Rich show.

Boston's baseball club just finished a month of May in which they went 10-19, including 1-6 away from Fenway to close the month. The Sox are seven games below .500 and have the second worst record in the American League.

Pessimists will point to the poor pitching and under-performing offense, but optimists will say they are just four games back from the division lead.

Toucher & Rich had on WBZ-TV's Dan Roche to get his thoughts.

"You believe with every fiber of your soul that this team is going to turn it around, don't you Dan?" asked Fred.

"You know why? It's June," Roche said with hope. "When the calendar flips, things can happen. That's the only hope that you have right now as a Red Sox fan as you wake up this morning with this team in disarray."

Roche admits he's not confident in his prediction, because nearly everybody on the team is playing below standards and expectations.

"You just look at it up and down, and you can pretty much point to everybody and say that they've been a disappointment. It's been bizarre to watch," Roche said.

Roche is in the clubhouse quite often, and there was always a sense in that room that, 'Don't worry. We'll figure it out.' But now with two months in the books, Roche would like to see more of a sense of urgency.

"I think the sense of urgency needs to come with some type of wake up call. I don't know what that is. The Red Sox have been trying, [manager] John Farrell has been trying to do everything that they can, but it's got to come from within. It's got to come from their leaders," Roche said.

"[Dustin] Pedroia, [Mike] Napoli and [David] Ortiz have got to get everybody going, and get [Pablo] Sandoval and [Hanley] Ramirez on board," he added. "If they do that I think they can get better, but right now everything is in disarray as they come home."
