Felger & Mazz: New Low For Red Sox -- Is The Season Over Already?

BOSTON (CBS) -- The Red Sox are just 22-29 after a 1-6 road trip, the fifth-worst record in baseball.

They may sit just four games back in the American League East at the moment, but on Monday's show, 98.5 The Sports Hub's Felger and Mazz say the Sox are on the verge of yet another lost season as we hit June 1.

"It is reaching the point, really, where you want to [forfeit the rest of the season]," said Mazz. "Is that allowed?"

Mazz said while Sunday afternoon's loss in Texas, with a bad error in the bottom of the ninth and a walk-off win for the Rangers, was tough to swallow, Saturday night's 8-0 loss was, "an embarrassment to baseball."

"If that is what it is going to be, for $200 million, I'll see you in November," said Mazz. "I'm not putting up with this crap."

To make matters worse, the Red Sox are not taking advantage of a very weak AL East, and their current hole may be too much to dig themselves out of.

"Eight, nine games under .500 -- that's it. They're not good enough to climb out of that hole," said Felger. "This division, as bad as it is, it's not going to hold this bad. The winner is not going to win the division with 83 wins, it will be 88 wins. Just go through history; the teams who win the division with a bad record are never 82-80."

The Cardinals won the NL Central back in 2006 with 83 wins, and would go on to win the World Series.

But not many see a big run in the Red Sox at the moment, and the hopes of another World Series title in Boston are fading fast.

"You're talking, and just eyeballing it, in general, if you win a bad division with a bad record, it's around 86 wins," said Felger. "Someone [in the AL East] is going to break away and be a handful of games over .500. If the Red Sox get to eight games under .500, I'm about to say that's it."

Hurley: Four Months Left, But Red Sox' Season Already Over

The Red Sox would have to play over .600 baseball the rest of the way to reach the 86-win mark.

"Maybe at this point, maybe they could do it, but if they have to go far over .600 in a four-month period -- nope. Their pitching is just not good enough," said Felger. "If they dig any deeper, that's it. It's over. I think this is their line of demarcation."
