Local Students Make Semifinals Of National Spelling Bee

WASHINGTON (CBS) -- Two local spellers have made it to the semifinals of the National Spelling Bee.

Christy Jetsin of Boston and Arushi Kalpande of Nashua, New Hampshire both advanced to the semifinal field of 49. Both participated in the National Spelling Bee last year.

Christy, 13, is a seventh grader at Boston Latin School. His hobbies include woodworking, playing with his pet rabbit, soccer and participating in math and science competitions. He plans to study computer and mechanical engineering.

Arushi, 13, is a seventh grader at Nashua Catholic Regional Junior High School. Arushi is a published poet and loves learning new languages. Her favorite school subject is science and she wants to become a physicist. She also plays the violin in the Nashoba Youth Orchestra.

Some of the words spellers faced in earlier rounds included jibboom, tarsorrhaphy, perruche and schmierkase.

The semifinal round begins at 10 a.m. on Thursday on ESPN2, and the finalists will compete later Thursday night starting at 8 p.m. on ESPN.
