Grafton Man Dies After Fleeing UMass Police Officers

WORCESTER (CBS) - A 23-year-old Grafton man died after he dove into Lake Quinsigamond while fleeing UMass Police Sunday night, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.

Authorities say Joseph Martin was in a car parked in a restricted area of the UMass campus and had an open container of alcohol and white powder in the car.

When a UMass Police officer asked him to get out of the car, Martin ran for the lake.

According to the District Attorney, Martin held up two rocks and threatened to strike two officers who were pursuing him.

Martin swam deeper into the water, ignoring the officers' warnings. He was pulled from the water off Regatta Point by the Worcester Fire Department dive team and was declared dead of an apparent drowning at UMass-Memorial Hospital.

State Police are investigating the death.
