Purse Stolen From Two-Time Cancer Survivor In Lowell
LOWELL (CBS) - A two-time cancer survivor was preparing for a yard sale when someone stole her purse containing money for bills and pledges for a cancer walk.
Lisa Porter was gathering items for the sale at the corner of Gorham and Saratoga Streets in Lowell. While setting-up over the weekend, she had her pocketbook with her in the yard. She said a woman came up and distracted her while a man stole her purse. In it was cash meant for bills and $145 in pledges that was also cash.
Porter had several reasons for holding the big sale. "I wanted to make registration fee (for the cancer walk), and donations and be able to pay my bills," said Porter.
Over the past three years, Porter, who's a single mom, beat breast cancer and cervical cancer. "I know what it's like for people who can't afford a wig. I know what it's like to lose your hair," said Porter.
She's more than mad and is resolved to make up the $145 in stolen donations, the money to pay her bills and raise even more money for the cancer walk in Lowell on May 31st.
"It's extremely important to me because I've been there. I know what it's like and I want to help other people going through that," said Porter.
Lowell police are investigating.
