Dog Feared Dead In Auburn House Fire Found Safe Near Bed

AUBURN (CBS) -- A dog feared lost in an Auburn house fire early Monday morning has been found safe, firefighters say.

The owner of the Rydberg Terrace Extension home was able to get his family, including an elderly woman in a wheelchair, out safely just after 1 a.m. But the family dog was nowhere to be found, and fire officials initially said they believed "Bella" had died in the three-alarm blaze.

Then the family got some good news – their Yorkshire puppy was found hiding near a bed.

"While investigating hot spots the on-duty crew discovered Bella, the missing family dog, safe and sound inside the residence," the Auburn Fire Department said. "A happy moment for the homeowner."

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but officials say it doesn't appear to be suspicious. The Red Cross will be asked to assist the family.
