Police: Man Broke Into Somerville Day Care And Tried To Steal Child

SOMERVILLE (CBS) -- Sandro Corbelli is expected in court Wednesday on numerous charges including kidnapping. Somerville police say he forced his way into a home day care on Dartmouth Street. He grabbed two children, but one was able to escape.

Mairia Santos helps run the daycare out of the second floor apartment. Hours after the event she said, "We are still freaking out."

"He was just kind of crazy. I pushed him away and called police," said Santos. "He tried to get into the house, but we have a gate."

She said Corbelli was yelling he wanted money to return to Brazil. When police arrived they said Corbelli had one-year old child in a bear hug.

Police were able to get the child. They said it took several officers to subdue Corbelli who even tried to get one of the officer's gun.

Corbelli was taken to the hospital with a head injury.

An officer was injured but is OK.

The Santos' take care of about five children. Parents said they would keep their children at the daycare.

Corbelli lived in the apartment above the daycare. He recently moved in with his uncle. Santos said she did not know him.
