Red Sox Fire Pitching Coach Juan Nieves

BOSTON (CBS) -- The Red Sox pitching staff has been one of the worst in all of baseball through more than a month of the MLB season, and as a result, pitching coach Juan Nieves has lost his job.

The Red Sox announced Thursday afternoon that Nieves has been relieved of his duties.

Prior to becoming Red Sox pitching coach, Nieves was the bullpen coach for the Chicago White Sox for the previous five seasons. He had worked for the White Sox for the nine seasons before that, as well. Prior to his time in Chicago, he worked for the Yankees for five years.

The 50-year-old native of Puerto Rico joined the Red Sox prior to the 2013 season, helping the team win the World Series in his first year on the job.

The Red Sox currently rank 29th out of 30 MLB teams with a team ERA of 4.86. The starters' ERA of 5.54 also ranks 29th out of 30.

On Thursday afternoon, 98.5 The Sports Hub's Zolak & Bertrand discussed the Red Sox parting ways with their pitching coach.
