Police Chief: Sudbury Man's Alleged Murder Of Parents 'Doesn't Shock Me'

SUDBURY (CBS) – The Sudbury community is grappling with the loss of a couple, allegedly murdered on vacation by their own son.

Police discovered the bodies of Jane and Kenneth Young inside their rented Virgin Islands condo in St. Thomas Monday.

Mikhail Brian Young, 24, is the accused killer. He was arraigned as a fugitive from justice Tuesday and will soon face homicide charges from law enforcement in St. Thomas.

"Mr. Young is very familiar with us he has an extensive history with us," Sudbury Police Chief Scott Nix said at a press conference Wednesday.

Mikhael Young has an extensive criminal history with Sudbury police which includes assault and battery, as well as indecent exposure charges. He was arrested for being in violation of his probation.

Jane and Kenneth had filed a restraining order against their son in 2011 claiming they feared for their safety given his mental health issues.

Nix said this crime is a tragedy, but not one he was surprised to learn of.

"Given our interaction it's unfortunate but it doesn't shock me, no," Nix said.

Jane Young was a recently retired math teacher from Lincoln-Sudbury High School. Her students put up signs around the school saying how much they loved her and will miss her.

She was an avid gardener too so some students wore floral shirts to school Wednesday in her memory.

"Jane will by far be remembered for how she saw the glass half-full and without a fault gave the benefit of the doubt to others," Superintendent Bella Wong told students during the morning announcements. "There is no right way to grieve such a loss, some will find comfort in a normal routine, others by being busy, some by just being still, we want to support you in the way that works for you."

The school is currently taking suggestions for a permanent memorial in the couple's memory.

As for Mikhail Young, he awaits extradition to St. Thomas.

If he waives extradition he will go there immediately and begin the legal process there. But if Mikhail fights extradition, the process could take much longer.

The Sudbury resident is currently being held without bail at the Billerica house of Correction. He is next scheduled to appear in court May 12.
