Hingham Police Turn Unwanted Medication Into Electricity
HINGHAM (CBS) – A local police department is giving a lesson in how to turn unused pills into electric power.
Hingham police shared a Facebook video of workers dumping unwanted medication into a shredding machine, before it drops several stories into an incinerator.
"The incinerator creates steam that is turned into electricity," police said. "The electricity is then used in nearby communities."
Police said they've collected 160 pounds of medication in the past six months via a box in their station lobby. It's then transported to the Covanta SEMASS facility in Wareham, which has waived all disposal costs in support of the program.
Burning the unwanted medication keeps it "away from temptation by others in our community," police said.
