Video Captures Large Tree Falling On Children At Chelsea Park

CHELSEA (CBS) -- Two boys suffered significant injuries after a large tree fell on children playing at a park in Chelsea Monday evening.

Eight-year-old Diego Ruiz is a brave little boy, now recovering at home after the terrifying incident.

Surveillance video shows that tree coming down Monday night in Washington Park where the children were playing. Diego has a nasty bruise and cut on his shoulder and stitches on the back of his head.

"We was going to the park and then the tree fell on us and then we was crying and then we can't escape," Diego said.

A two-year-old boy was also badly hurt by the falling tree and rushed to the hospital with a fractured skull.

Experts are looking into why the tree fell down and inspecting the other trees in the park, which was completely renovated not long ago.

"The park was done over a couple of years ago, we did a full assessment at that time we have a report on them and they came back as being OK trees," said Chelsea DPW Director Joe Foti.

Witnesses told police they heard "a cracking sound" before the tree fell.

"I am wishing both of the injured children a speedy recovery and am grateful that others in the park escaped injury," Police Chief Brian Keyes said in a statement. "I also thank the other adults in the park who acted quickly to remove the children from the debris and by assisting first responders."
